If you're going to be in Rome for more than just a few days, after renting your Rome accommodation in the centre, you could take a short break to the coast - just like many of the locals do during the summer months! After a short bus journey from the centre, you could be sunbathing on one of the most beautiful beaches in the area.
However, if you have the luxury of access to a car, or catch the train, slightly further away you will find the magnificent beaches at Sperlonga, a coastal town in the province of Latina, about half way between Rome and Naples.
To the north of the headland is the modern part of Sperlonga, catering mainly for tourists keen on well-developed beaches.
Yet Sperlonga's true gem lies south of the town.
Here, a little beyond the harbour stretches a fantastic length of beach, with beautifully clean sand and water.
Here you can bring you own towels and umbrellas, whereas on the tourist beaches, you have to rent them.
To get to Sperlonga simply catch the Rome to Napoli train and get off at Fondi-Sperlonga (taking about 1 hour).
At Fondi station, return bus tickets in the little toacco kiosk at the station then catch the Sperlonga bus from directly outside the station.
The trip into Sperlonga takes around 15 minutes.
However, you won´t be able to escape Rome´s aura for too long and the excitement of Rome will draw you back to the centre.
During your holiday be sure to stay in a fantastic Rome apartment or hotel in Rome deep in the centre, and explore the luscious ornamental gardens throughout the city and the ancient villas, the remains of the crowns of villas which encircled the papal city.
Alternatively, if you still fancy wandering out of the centre, the small seaside town of Fregene offers a nostalgic experience of 1960s and 70s old glamour, as it used to be the hotspot for the beautiful, rich, and famous Romans, a card which it still plays.
In the summer, some Roman nightclubs hold their summer events there (such as Gilda on the Beach, which lasts all summer).
