"Parks and Recreation" Season 1 Episode Guide

The first season of Parks and Recreation lasted only six episodes, introducing the employees of the Parks and Recreation Department of Pawnee, Indiana, including deputy director Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler), an eager government go-getter. She works with Tom Haverford (Aziz Ansari), Ron Swanson (Nick Offerman) and intern April Ludgate (Aubrey Plaza). Local nurse Ann Perkins (Rashida Jones) and her musician boyfriend Andy Dwyer (Chris Pratt) both spend time with Leslie as she works to turn a local eyesore near their house into a park.

Read on for the Parks and Recreation Season 1 episode guide.

Episode 1
Title:
“Pilot”
Original Airdate: April 9, 2009

At a public meeting for the Parks Department, nurse Ann Perkins complains about a dangerous construction pit near her house. Her boyfriend Andy Dwyer fell in the pit and broke both of his legs, and she wants something done about it. Leslie Knope decides to take it on as a personal project, and not only fill in the pit but also turn it into a park. She enlists city planner (and her former one-night stand) Mark Brendanawicz to help her, and he convinces Leslie’s boss Ron Swanson to let Leslie form a subcommittee to look into building the park.

Episode 2
Title:
“Canvassing”
Original Airdate: April 16, 2009

Leslie enlists Mark, Tom, Ann, April and Leslie to go door-to-door building support for turning the pit into a park, in advance of a town hall meeting on the issue. Leslie attempts to delay the meeting after the canvassing doesn’t go well, but the meeting goes ahead, and it’s a total disaster.

She still feels proud for having held her first public meeting, and getting her mother, an important executive in the school district, to attend.

Episode 3
Title:
“The Reporter”
Original Airdate: April 23, 2009

Leslie invites local reporter Shauna Malwae-Tweep to write a story about the effort to turn the pit into a park. Leslie gets really nervous about dealing with Shauna and enlists Mark to help. Mark sleeps with Shauna, which upsets Leslie and causes her to give a flustered interview. Mark says some negative things to Shauna about the park that he thinks are off the record, and Andy admits that he was drunk when he fell in the pit, both of which end up in Shauna’s story.

Episode 4
Title:
“Boys' Club”
Original Airdate: April 30, 2009

Leslie decides she wants to break into the informal social group of male government employees who hang out after work. In trying to impress them, she opens a gift basket of wine and cheese from a local company, and then the next day she demands that she be reprimanded for ethics violations, since her actions were against department policy. Ron at first refuses, but when April posts a video online of herself drinking the wine, the ethics committee gives Leslie a reprimand for allowing a minor to drink alcohol.

Episode 5
Title:
“The Banquet”
Original Airdate: May 7, 2009

Leslie’s mother is given a prestigious political award at a banquet. Leslie shows up at the banquet with a very masculine haircut, and people mistake her and Ann for a lesbian couple. Leslie wants to impress a member of the zoning board who could help her get the pit rezoned for a park. After Leslie gets blown off, her mother suggests that she resort to blackmail to get what she wants, but it backfires. Tom enlists Mark to help him hit on women at a bar.

Episode 6
Title:
“Rock Show”
Original Airdate: May 14, 2009

Andy gets his casts removed, and he invites everyone to come see his band play. Leslie’s mother sets her up on a dinner with a government official, which Leslie believes is a business meeting but is actually a date. After the dinner, Leslie rushes over to the show, and arrives just as it ends. She and Mark get drunk and make out at the pit, and Mark falls in. Ann finds out that Andy kept his casts on two weeks longer than his doctor recommended, so that Ann could continue waiting on him.
