In a presentation which they delivered at the Cutting Edge Aesthetic Surgery Symposium of the New York Plastic Surgery Foundation, they reported on an expanded cohort that incorporated information for 1500 cases involving 812 patients who were treated at various anatomic sites and had fat aspirate volumes in the range of 50 ml to 1400 ml.
The initial 500 cases were carried out using the Smartlipo (1064nm single wavelength workstation.
The next 500 were carried out using the Smartlipo MPX (1064/1320 nm dual wavelength workstation) and the last 500 were carried out utilizing the 1064/1440 nm wavelength of the Smartlipo Triplex (triple wavelength workstation).
Some Conclusions from the Study The following conclusions were made from the study: • Laser-aided liposuction performed with local anesthesia provided reproducible results and was associated with the least degree of morbidity.
• Complications were reported in less than 1 percent of the patients on whom the study was performed.
These complications however were not serious ones.
• 99 percent of the patients were able to get back to their regular routine on the second day after surgery.
• When general anesthesia or intravenous sedation is not utilized, recovery is faster.
• Only around 7 percent of patients needed a touch-up.
Thus patients, who may not otherwise be interested in body contouring surgery, may find laser liposuction performed with local anesthesia appealing.
• In the case of darker-skin patients, there may be some short-term hyper-pigmentation at the access incision sites.
