New Zealand's capital city of Wellington is a great place to be at any time of the year, and this summer is no exception. From January 17 to March 31, the city's Summer City 2012 festival will feature a huge array of fun activities, many of them being held along the city's popular waterfront area.Wellington events over the summer festival period include something for everyone, including arts, culture, sports and music.
Nightly concerts at the Botanic Garden will run from March 14 - 25, with a great line up of acts to keep everyone happy from 7pm each evening. Acts already confirmed include Irish band The Shenanigans, singer songwriter Justin Firefly and The Roseneath Centennial Ragtime Band. Those who love an evening of music can also attend the sunset concerts atShorlandParkinIslandBayfrom March 3 - 11.
The festival's Wellington events include plenty of fun for families, with the Great Scavenger Hunt on 22 January and the Teddy Bears Picnic on 28 January. Oriental Bay is the venue for the city's Big Dig treasure hunt. The annual event will begin at 11am on 11 February.
Cultural events during the summer include a Pasifika festival in Waitangi Park on 21 January where you can find delicious food and traditional performers as well as the chance to try your hand at some traditional crafts and a bit ofCook Island drumming. Another event for culture lovers will be the Chinese New Year parade on the waterfront on February 11 and 12.
More of the Wellington events planned for this year's summer festival are focused at the waterfront, giving the event real atmosphere. One of the special events of the festival will be the Birdman competition held on 23 January around the Taranaki Street Wharf, Te Papa Promenade and Frank Kitts Park. This quirky competition will find the most creative "flying" costumes as competitors jump off the wharf and try to spend as long as possible in the air before ending up, inevitably, in the harbour. The competition will also feature kids' rids and activities, markets and a singer songwriter stage as well as a BMX Jump Ramp.
Sports lovers will have plenty to keep them active this summer, with Wellington events such as the State Capital Classic Ocean Swim on 29 January at Freyberg and Oriental beaches. Participants can choose to swim a few hundred metres or up to 3.3 kilometres. Swimmers and runners will also love the Splash and Dash event being held from Freyberg Beach on alternative Wednesdays until 28 March.
For something new this summer, why not try Salsa at Sunset at Oriental Parade every Wednesday in February. You don't need to have any experience or a partner. Just come along and join in the fun.
