Bedbugs in hotels are not uncommon.
In fact, hotels and motels are the perfect place for infestations.
People who go on holiday from places with a high rate of bedbug infestation often carry the bugs in their luggage into the hotels and of course, it is in motels, bed-and-breakfasts, and hotels that people often stay when they go on holiday.
When they unpack their luggage at the hotel or motel they unpack all the bedbugs hitch-hikers as well.
Once they infest a single room, they crawl to the next room, create a new colony, and then infest the next room and so on.
Many people have the wrong notion about bedbugs; they think that they only infest hotels and motels that are unclean.
This is totally untrue, They do not dwell in places because they are dirty (like cockroaches or rats) but because they are attracted to warmth and feed on human blood.
So, this means that even fancy and upmarket hotels could have a problem should they not have effective pest management.
What does a bedbug look like? They are reddish-brown in color, oval-shaped (like apple seeds), and are very flat which allow them to hide in tiny crevices and go unnoticed / undetected to the untrained eye.
Where do they hide? They can take refuge in any small space such as bed seams, sofa's, chairs, carpets, and furniture nearest to the bed.
They are nocturnal insects which means they feed at night.
They are generally more active approximately one hour before dawn.
Their regular feeding cycle (when a host is present) is five to ten days.
Telltale signs of an infestation include:
Inspect the soft furnishings in the living areas, edges, seams and underneath the bed mattresses, crevices of the furniture including the bed frames.
Bedbugs are rarely visible, so should you see one crawling near you, it means that there are many adults fighting over a single host.
