Preparing Your Patio Furniture for Winter

When you start seeing leaves dry up and fall onto the ground, you know the warmer summer months have ended and it is about time you prepared your outdoor furniture for storage. A little bit of planning can ensure the possibility of you enjoying your set of patio furniture Toronto for many years. Most of your furniture would have been designed to be able to survive for years even after being exposed to rain, heat, and a little wind. However, the general winter conditions can shorten your patio furniture's life considerably. But it is possible to protect your furniture with the help of a few minimal purchases to help minimize wear and tear of your furniture. Your furniture type should determine your preparations for winter storage.

Cleaning furniture

Ensuring the cleanliness of your furniture before storage will help avoid corrosion and staining so you can use it when sunny days return. To clean wicker or metal furniture, use warm water, mild soap, and a sponge or gentle brush to clean its surface. Air dry or towel dry the furniture completely and address any repainting or repair areas before you place it in storage rooms. For wooden sets, clean your furniture's surface using warm water and mild soap with a gentle sponge or scrub brush before air drying or towel drying the furniture till it's completely dry. Look for areas that might require staining, sanding, or painting.

If the wood used has a very natural finish, rub a little mineral oil or furniture oil onto the surface to avoid splintering or to avoid it from becoming brittle when in winter storage. If your furniture is plastic, wipe well with a damp cloth and dry it before stacking it in storage. Brush off any debris from the surface of your umbrellas and cushions. Remove cushion covers, wash them, and dry them using the manufacturer's instructions. If the covers cannot be removed, use mild soapy water with a sponge and wipe off any dirt from the cushions. Do the same for umbrellas. Dry them completely before placing them in storage.

Covering furniture

If you don't have enough storage space to store your furniture, you might have to cover them up securely in the yard. Consolidate the furniture pieces in such a way that it occupies minimum space. Stack chairs, dismantle any parts that could be damaged, and remove cushions. Select a location that is convenient and provides maximum shelter. Use furniture covers like heavy duty canvas or plastic film to cover them and seal it to protect them from damage and prevent moisture retention.

If you can successfully follow the given tips, you can probably be sure of the safety of your patio furniture Toronto.
