Sometimes it's hard to get your children to do their homework. At other times it's hard for your child to get everything done. As a parent, you need to make sure that this is getting done. Find out what you can do that will get your children to do their homework so that they can be more successful in school and learn more.

Let your child know that he or she must get their homework done. It's best to set a time when homework time starts as opposed to just hoping it happens at some point in the evening. Some parents want homework to be done as soon as the child is home from school. Others will set a time later in the evening. Use whatever works with your children and your schedule.

You need to know what your child really needs to get done. It's best to not only know what needs to be done for the night but also those longer term projects that will take time. If your child has a habit of not telling you what the assignments are, ask the teacher to let you know what major projects are being assigned.

Set an area of the home that the child will do homework. You can pick a spot or let your kid do that. It's best out in the open so that you can be around to monitor that it's getting done and assist when needed. Try to keep it away from distracting things like the television.

Make agreements on distractions that will come up. Can your child take a phone call if it comes in or not? Deal with these issues before they happen so they won't interrupt and cause conflicts.

You might have to help your child get certain things done. If they don't understand it, all the time in the world isn't going to help them figure it out. Be there to help.

If your child refuses to do homework, take away privileges. Set the tone that homework is important and will get done.
