Survival Packs For Children Leaving Home

Seeing your children leave home for the first time is a moment that many parents almost dread, but of course it's a time of celebration. For the first time your children are able to stretch their wings and explore the world around them without the safety net of their parents home behind them and this can be scary for the parents that are left behind. You can help allay your fears and be more comfortable with the situation by reminding yourself that this is a step everyone has to take. If that doesn't help, why not create a survival pack for your child to take with them into the big, bad world?

The first thing that most people think to put in a survival pack is tinned food, you want to make sure your child has something to eat if they run out of money and tinned food is a great way to go about it. Packets of soup and noodles are also a good idea and a lot lighter to carry. Many packets of biscuits and crackers will last a long time as long as the seal isn't broken too.

However, if your child can't take much in the way of food with them, why not buy some vouchers from a well-known supermarket? This means that even if they accidentally run out of cash, you'll be safe in the knowledge that they will be able to buy themselves food and essentials. Chain pharmacies also offer vouchers, meaning you can rest assured that your child can buy themselves tissues and medicines should they come down with a bug.

Another good choice for things to be included in a survival pack include; an easy to use recipe book with simple recipes and a 'How To' book full of handy hints to be used around the home. Simple things such as how to change fuses or work out whether the pilot light in their boiler is working can have a big impact on the comfort of your child in their new home.

Of course if there's one thing you'll want your child to be able to do it's phone home. Equip them with some call credit or any way for them to call home free and make sure that they know you'll always be happy to hear from them. Add something personal to your survival pack, such as a family photo, and you'll also have a great way to remind your child that you're there for them wherever they are staying.
