Perhaps the most fundamental feature of the Timex Triathlon Watch is the Chronograph which is a fancy word for stopwatch. The Chrono has been a feature of the sports watch since it's beginning back in 1986.
Many Ironman Triathlon watches contain Lap Recall, but not all models have this feature. Lap Recall is the ability to store and recall workout sessions. A workout session is an time-stamped entry in the watch against which a number of laps can be recorded.
All Timex Ironman Watches can record multiple laps, but if you want to store sessions as well as laps, you should check that the Ironman you are about to purchase supports "Lap Recall". You have been warned:)
This article focuses on how to use the basic stopwatch. The following article assumes you are familiar with the layout of an Ironman watch. For those of you who aren't, a diagram can be found on our website.
How to Enter "Chrono Mode"
To enter "CHRONOGRAPH MODE" from "NORMAL TIME". Press the MODE button once.
The watch will display the words "CHRONO" for about 1 second.
You are now in "CHRONOGRAPH MODE".
Changing Layout the Configuration
Most Timex Triathlon Watches have a two line display, for displaying real-time session information.
Once you are in CHRONO MODE, you can set the display format by pressing and holding SET/RECALL until the desired display configuration appears.
The standard display configuration options are:
LAP
------
SPLIT
and
SPLIT
------
LAP
Some Timex Ironman models offer more options than these too.
A Lap is recorded by pressing START/SPLIT while the chrono is running.
LAP is defined as the *current* lap time, whereas SPLIT is the overall running time.
Running The Chrono
To use the Chrono press START/SPLIT. The chrono will continues to run even if you exit to another mode on the watch. Press STOP/RESET to stop the chrono, or START/SPLIT to take a split. Lap and split times will then be displayed in the format you selected.
It should be noted that lap and split times will appear frozen for 10 seconds, but this can be overridden by pressing the MODE again.
At any time, whether the chrono is running or stopped, pressing SET/RECALL, then + or - will scroll through stored laps or to recall stored laps/splits. Pressing SET/RECALL will return to the running chrono.
Pressing and holding STOP/REST will clear the chrono.
The Ironman Chrono mode is incredibly simple to use once you get a knack for how it works, yet it is also incredibly powerful and is useful to both the weekend warrior or the elite.
