The Chittorgarh Fort in the state of Rajasthan rises elegantly from the banks of the Berach River welcoming tourists.
The majestic Chittorgarh fort, which tops among the largest forts in India, has a history of beauty, profuseness, bravery, deception, patricide and many other darker and brighter layers of the Rajput rulers, famous for their show of might against the mighty Mughals.
It protected the capital of Mewar province, the Chittor and was the residence of the rulers.
There had been three clans from the Rajputana bloodline who ruled from here, namely, Guhilot, Sisodias and the Suryavanshi extending from 700AD to 1567 AD when Mughal Emperor Akbar captured it after a fierce and tactful battle which makes the Army generals of today to shy.
Spread across the hill rising 180 m from the sea level, the fort covers an area of 280 ha in the close vicinity of the gushing Berach River.
Within the fort there used to be around 84 water bodies out of which 22 remain today comprising of talabs (ponds), kunds (wells), and the typical Rajput stepwells known as baories for meeting the needs of the royal family, their maidens and the huge contingent of guards on the lookout for enemies at the two towers and seven gates leading into it.
