- The guest room is called a Washitsu, which consists of tatami mats on the ground and a low Zataku table, where you will sit on Zabutan cushions placed on the floor. The bed is created by attendants each night.
- The Nakai-San is the woman who takes care of you while you stay at the Ryokan. She will bring you tea and sweets, known as Wagashi, after you settle into your room. She will also be the one to make your bed at night.
- An Onsen is a Japanese hot spring where people take their baths. Japan is a volcanic archipelago and is known for the Toji, the therapeutic healing of the hot springs.
- The Yukata is a Japanese robe, sometime referred to as a Kimono, which you adorn after relaxing from your therapeutic bath. The Ryokan will supply this for their guests to wear throughout the hotel.
- A Washoku is a traditional Japanese dinner frequently served at the Ryokans. The chefs must pass a national license to be able to cook Washoku meals. These meals are typically served in your Washitsu and each delicate dish will be explained to you.
